Sustainable intensification of crop-livestock systems to improve food security and farm income diversification in the Ethiopian highlands
Project Design Workshop
30 January - 2 February 2012, Addis Ababa Ethiopia

Site selection and criteria to be used (Stanley Wood and An Notenbaert)

This workshop provides an opportunity for a broad group of important stakeholders to both learn about the project plans and to share their views on expectations from and opportunities for synergies with the project (days 1 and 2) and for the core project team to finalize the project details (days 3 and 4).

  • We first zoomed in on highland areas;
  • Then, if we zoom in on wheat areas, we exclude a large number of woredas;
  • Then we can look at 'AGP woredas';
  • We can display the map of dominant crops;
  • We want to be guided by Dr. Adefris for the site selection;
  • (Jerry) there will be a process for site selection. The sites selected today potentially won't be the only ones. There might be different gaps to fill in as we go along;
  • (Adefris) As part of the CAADP project, the government is indicating where to go; there is always an approval process between the CAADP and the government --> that can be another overlay e.g. 83 AGP woredas + CAADP and government policy priorities. AGP woredas were selected also for early wins to show to donors. In West Africa, there are very fertile woredas. We expect much less productivity from the highlands than from the West of the country.
  • (Suzanne): looking at wheat-producing+AGP woredas, what's left is hungry Ethiopia with degraded natural resources and investments from the Safety Net.
  • We need to agree on all the criteria; If we follow the criterias, we look at the target zones and look at gradients (intensification index, land degradation, ag potential side e.g. length of growing period);
  • Looking at the remoteness and length of growing period, when combining we get to 4 zones: arid, semi-arid but not so remote, humid zones and market-accessible or not).
  • From that map we could decide to pick the zones where we would work.
